With the beginning of XXI century airships has been seen as a complementary platform of air transportation systems in use capable to create new market niches and new productive sectors. Nowadays airships are intended for several applications such as: heavy cargo transportation, point-to-point transportation, advertising, aerial observation, patrolling and monitoring, research, and tourism. The return of the airships is attached with a growing concern among the aeronautical community to adopt green technologies economically sustainable able to build up innumerous technological developments in airship projects. This work firstly examines these technological improvements, secondly shows the feasibility of airships in certain market niches, and thirdly brings out a primary study concerning the viability of using airships within the portuguese tourism sector.
