Airport operators, planners and regulatory agencies frequently use economic impact studies to assess the local and regional socio economic changes resulting from the increasing and diversified economic activities associated to airports. The most common methods to measure those impacts are the Input-Output method, the Collection of Benefits method and most recently the Catalytic method. Variables like employment, wages, local and regional spending, air traffic levels or international tourist flows are usually used. Nevertheless, some important limitations have been identified in the practice of airports economic impact studies, which raise the question if the metric used to assess the geographic scope of such economic impacts is the more adequate and also if besides impacts the increase of opportunities associated with airports is taken into account.

This theoretical paper proposes a new approach to better identify the real socio-economic impacts and intends to contribute to a better understanding of how the processes and people create value into the airports’ network ecosystem. The VNA – Value Network Analysis, is used as an integrated methodology to identify the added values (tangibles and intangibles) generated in the business system of landside airports and in their interactions with the surrounding communities. The matrix key airport performance benchmarking areas of ACI (Airport Council International), related to the landside of the airport, are used to define the system.
