The laboratory area has the mission of supporting and transferring  technology, and comprises a set of resident laboratories coordinated by UBI professors in the areas of health and life sciences.

Vision Sciences Laboratory

This laboratory develops and implements the qualitative and quantitative evaluation of vision problems in order to study their impact in ageing and quality of life that lives in the Cova da Beira region.



The main task of the Vision Sciences research group is to focus the research to develop and implement the adequate screening procedures to qualitative and quantitatively evaluate vision problems such as age related macular degeneration (ARMD), diabetes, hypertension, glaucoma, cataracts, and neurodegenerative diseases.



Detection and monitoring of the vision problems in good time using visual acuity measurements (ETDRS and stenopeic), contrast sensitivity measurements, intraocular pressure, visual fields, fundoscopy, aberrometry, corneal topography, anterior chamber analysis (slit lamp), and lens densitometry.



Fundus camera, ocular aberrometer, corneal topographer, keretometer, computerized perimeter, digital ocular tonometer, biomicroscopy (slit lamp), visual acuity charts, colour and contrast sensitivity tests, and Amsler grid.

The Laboratory of Drug-Toxicology develops its activity in the area of ​​clinical analysis and also in the environmental field – water, food, and others of equal health interest and safeguard public health.

Laboratory of General Physiopathology

The general physiopathology laboratory of UBIMEDICAL is a unit of epidemiological evaluation, service provision and research aimed at the evaluation of parameters related to human respiratory function and the elasticity of the organs by non-invasive methods. It is capable of evaluating ventilation in normal and pathological situations at rest and in exercise, the Ecographic analysis of thoracic and abdominal structures, the non-invasive elasticity of organs such as the liver, being possible this evaluation from the pediatric age to the adult and the evaluation of the adipose infiltration of organs such as the liver, allowing the characterization of pathological phenomena that increases stiffness, such as fibrosis.



Epidemiological characterization of the respiratory function of the population and analysis of its evolution, especially in situations of disease such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and epidemiological characterization of asthma in elderly patients.

Evaluation of home-based respiratory / cardiac rehabilitation programs using telemedicine.
